An autocratic state somewhere would have implemented it throughout the country to produce the most brilliant minds the world has ever known. If someone had a key to vastly improving educational outcomes, some city in some country would have implemented it to massive results. I love Coursera and EdX (I'm too old for Khan Academy to be useful), but the idea that live lectures are going away is belied by the fact that empirically, in-person learning including those live lectures has performed better. Every so often over the past couple of decades, you will hear someone making the same claim about the Internet-based learning and yet even live-streaming lectures have shown worse results than in-person learning. Education could focus on non-lecture content. Now, the best lecturers could put their lectures on VHS and people would learn in the privacy of their own homes. When the VHS came out, the end of traditional education was heralded. I leave you with the cover of the Nov 2012 edition of Forbes where they (rightly?) called the EdTech industry "the $1 trillion opportunity". So.as EdTech founders around the world raise billions, let's take a moment to acknowledge and thank the man who started it all. I am way past my school and college years but even I love their online videos - they are great fun.īy the way, Khan Academy is a non-profit and all lessons are absolutely free! Sal could easily have been a billionaire. If you have children in your family, do check out Khan Academy's Youtube channel or their website. He has revolutionized how children and young adults learn today and been a catalyst in the explosive growth that we are witnessing in EdTech startups both in India and around the world. Salman Khan (or Sal Khan) is the founder of Khan Academy. And more people around the world need to know about this. Because I strongly believe he is doing a fabulous job of making education more accessible and interesting for students.

And this is my own small effort to change that. Arguably one of the most influential people in the world most of us have never heard of.
